Salkantay to Machupicchu 5 days


SALKANTAY MOUNTAIN is the second largest mountain in the Cusco region (6271m/20,568ft), On the first night, you'll camp within clear sight of the snow capped peak of Salkantay mountain. The second day will be the longest day of the tour, and while you work a bit harder to get there, the views at the top are even more rewarding. The walk to reach the famous Apacheta Pass at 4,600m/15,088ft) (the Inca Trail's 'Dead Woman’s Pass' is only 4,200m/13,776ft)) is not strenuous neither very steep, afterward it is mainly descent into a more tropical area passing Andenes and Chaullay on the far side of the mountain. we spend the rest of the 4th evening relaxing in the town and hotsprings of Aguas Calientes. Early in the morning we walk up to Machu Picchu for your guided tour, a well deserved reward but many say the trek is a prize in itself! This trek includes a 6 Kg porterage service per person, (a duffle bag is provided for transportation of your basic belongings sleeping bag and mat and sleep wear,) have a daypack for personal ítems, less crowded campsites along the trail, our trip takes you through the great look out point toward Machupicchu, Option to visit the Hot springs at Santa Teresa where we also can make our amazing adrenaline sport of zip line + rappel in the 4th day and finally we will take a hike from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes town. Also the amazing walk to Huaynapicchu mountain after your visit of Machupicchu to complete a great adventure,or walk to Intipunku " the sun´s gate " the look out point where the Inca Trail ends or a nice walk to the Inka-bridge.

DAY 01: CUSCO - MOLLEPATA - SAYAPATA – HUMANTAY LAKE - SORAYPAMPA (L)(D)

We will leave Cusco approximately at 5:00a.m. A bus will take us to the town of Mollepata (2900 meters above sea level) where we will arrive approximately at 7:30 in the morning, we will stop for last minute supplies, leg-stretching or to use the restrooms at a local restaurant. We will continue our journey to Sayapata, our trek starting point. We will meet with our support staff, who will load the equipment on horses and mules. Around 9:00 a.m., we will begin our hike toward Soraypampa (3850 meters above sea level). During the hike we will have panoramic views of the majestic Salkantay, other mountains covered with snow, and the Valley of Apurimac River. Around 1:00p.m., we will have a Peruvian lunch. After lunch, we will visit Humantay Lake, a marvelous lake in the mountains, (3 hours hike) and we will come back to our campsite where the tents will be ready for you as well as your dinner. Walking distance aproximately 10 Km.

DAY 02: SORAYPAMPA - CHALLWAY (B)(L)(D)

Today, nature will change drastically from dry sceneries to snowy peaks and tropical areas. After a nutritious breakfast, we will start the most difficult part of the trek. We will start the hike around 7:00 in the morning. We will hike to a place called Pampas Salkantay, then go toward the left side of the snowy peaks of Umantay located next to the Apu Salkantay. At midday, we will be on the highest point (4600 meters above sea level).We will appreciate spectacular views of the mountains and the imposing snowy peaks of the Salkantay (6264 meters above sea level) which is known as the second highest point of the Cusco region. Around 1:00 p.m., we will have our lunch, in the area called Huayracmachay. After a trek of approximately 3 hours, we will arrive to our camp in Challway (2920 meters above sea level). Around 7:00p.m., we will recuperate from the trek and eat dinner. Walking distance aproximately 18 Km.

DAY 03: CHALLWAY – PLAYA SAHUAYACO – SANTA TERESA HOT SPRINGS (B)(L)(D)

Around 7:00a.m., we will start our trek. We will walk for about 6 hours toward Playa Sahuayaco and during this period; we will observe a town called Collpabamba, also called the “Forest Cloudy Brow” where waterfalls, fruit-bearing trees, varied flora, and birds can be observed. If we are lucky, we will be able to observe the famous bird called the “Cock of the Rocks”. Here we will have lunch. At 2:00 p.m. a local bus will take us to Santa Teresa Hot Springs, where you will enjoy and relax at the hot pools. You will have dinner and camping there. Walking distance aproximately 14 Km.

DAY 04: SANTA TERESA- HYDROELECTRIC - AGUAS CALIENTES (B)(L)(D)

After of our delicious breakfast we are going to walk for approximately around 8:30 a.m we begin our trek, we follow this rising trail, from which we will see plantations of coffee, banana, passion fruit and a lovely view of the Santa Teresa Valley. We follow along the riverside of Vilcanota River until arrive to the Oroya (canopy bridge) From here we have an option to hike to hidroelectrica or to catch a small car where will take us until Hidroelectrica (25 minutes), from this place we can observe the back of Machupicchu Santuary, where we have the last lunch with all staff. from here we will continue walking until arrive to Aguas Calientes around 4:30 p.m then we will stay in a hostal the last night Walking distance aproximately 10Km.

DAY 05: AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO (B)

Today, you will start early at around 4:30a.m. and walk up to Machu Picchu and to the Sun Gate. Or optional you can take take bus up from aguas calientes ($ 9 usd dolars ) to machupicchu In Machu Picchu, you will have a guided tour for about two hours and after that you will be free to explore the Citadel and take pictures, or if you desire, ascent toward the Huaynapicchu Mountain. At 6:45p.m. (depending on availability), you will be taking a train to Ollantaytambo and from there; a bus will drive you to Cusco.

     HUAYNA PICCHU MOUNTAIN WALK.- This walk to the mountain Huaynapicchu after your guided tour in Machupicchu, it takes 2 hours Ticket is included for people who book in advance and permits are available.

    To guarantee Huayna Picchu permits you need to pay for your booking at least 1 month in advance.

      TRAVEL INSURANCE: We recommend you to obtain a personal Travel Insurance, including Medical Problems, Baggage loss or damage. If you need help to find a travel Insurance Company please let us know. 

     PRIVACY POLICY: All the information you provide us, full name, passport number, nationality, date of birth, telephone number, and address or your credit card info will be used strictly to process your trip arrangements. This information will not be shared with anyone.

    TERMS & CONDITIONS

    ( minimum 4 people)

     1.- You must advise MACAW ADVENTURE of any medical problems or allergies. You need to be in good physical health and if your health is questionable, then you should consult a doctor. If you are over the age of 65, then you will need to present us with a current medical certificate as Salkantay trek goes to 4600 mtrs.

     2.- You must advise your guides if you wish to leave the group or the camping area for independent walks or sightseeing. If you are experiencing any problems with the service of the guide or tour please advise the guide in that moment so he can resolve any problems as soon as possible.

      3.- FINAL PAYMENT: The remaining balance needs to be paid at your arrival to Cusco in US$ Dollars cash (Exchange rate 2.90 Soles for US$1 if your preference is paying with Soles).

      Payments with credit / debit cards need to be made 2 weeks prior to the Inca Trail and only accepted with the commission of 5% included. You should contact us 2 weeks prior to the tour responding to the email with your confirmation requesting any final items to be added and then we can reconfirm the exact balance to be paid plus the 5% commission. You then can enter the same online system with your reference code and make the balance payment.

     If you prefer not to use the online system you can skype macaw adventure and we can do a manual payment for you quickly and easily. Or you can use Western Union.

      4.- If paying in cash, you must pay for your tour in the office in full by 12:00 noon, 5-2 days before your departure. (When payments are made at our office in dollars, kindly ensure that your notes do not have any rips/tears/holes in them as these are not accepted in Peru).

      We accept US$ Dollars cash at our office in Cusco when paying the final balance. Our rate exchange is S/ 2.90 Soles for US$1 or cash US$. (You can withdraw US$ from the many ATM machines. Generally more economic on debit cards).

     If a final payment is not made by 12 noon the day before any tour or service such as the Inca Trail, the total balance will be charged in US$ to your credit card plus the 8% commission.

      5.- The student US$20 discount for use of student cards is regulated by the park itself, not MACAW ADVENTURE Travel. All student ISIC cards are validated by the control of the park and only accepted if you scanned a clear copy of your valid ISIC card through with your deposit at the time of booking and it was confirmed. A Youth Travel card or International Teachers cards are not accepted by the control.

      6.- You must carry your original passport and valid ISIC card (if applicable) on the trail, If you do not take the correct original passport as indicated in your permit, the control will annul your permit and refuse you entrance to the trail. If for any reason, you organize a new passport after we have purchased your permits, you must bring the old passport with you, or if this is impossible advise us in writing with a scan of the old passport and your new passport for us to present to the INC with official documentation to avoid problems. Administration charge for this formal change is (US$ 15 pp) You must pay for your tour in full by 12:00 noon, 2 days before your departure.

      7.- We include in this trek a 6 kilos for porterage for your camp belongings (Mattress,sleeping bag and personal clothes ) due to the strenuos nature of the trek but if you will require more let us know. If you have no experience in high altitude trekking please hire more porterage. This is a serious requirement and 3 kilos more is only US$20 for the entire trek so well worth it.

      8.- Change of dates is only possible if the group is still left with more than a minimum and the train tickets and Machu Picchu entrance have not been finalised. US$ 25.00 is charged.

     Change of dates when train tickets have been finalised incurs a further fee as Peru rail also charges for changes of dates. This administration charge of US$20.00 per ticket in this case is incurred. At times a change of date may only be possible in an upgrade to a higher standard carriage and so the difference in price would need to be paid additionally. Equally if Machu Picchu entrance has already been purchased it is not transferable or refundable so a further entrance needs to be purchased. This is US$ 60.00 but generally only purchased 10 days before tour.

      9.- Cancelation made by Clients :

      9. a.- Cancelation of tour up to 2 months before departure incurs a loss of the US$ 200.00 non refundable deposit.

      9. b..- Cancelation of tour within 2 months and 1 month of departure incurs a loss of 50% of total tour cost...

     9. c.- Cancelation of tour within 1 month and 1 week of departure incurs a loss of 70% of total tour cost...

      9. d.- Cancelation of tour within 1 week - 48 hours of departure incurs a loss of 90% of total tour cost...

     However we can organise an alternative tour to visit Machu Picchu joining your group and utilising your train tickets and entrance, completing the tour as normal from Aguas Calientes day 4.

     10.- If you become ill or injured on the trail and are unable to continue, a porter and mule will be provided to accompany you back to an area with emergency assistance capabilities. Helicopter air lifts and medical assistance are paid at the expense of the passenger. If you fail to complete the tour due to illness we will assist you to meet with your group at Machupicchu to recommence your tour at that point. There will be no refund from the original payment, however we will prepare a document to certify illness which can be used to present to your travel insurance company.

      11- MACAW ADVENTURE will take all reasonable care in providing service to our clients to avoid accident, illness, loss of personal property and will only employ suitably qualified staff. We accept responsibility for the actions of our own employees. MACAW ADVENTUREl cannot however be responsible for any action or event that was unforeseeable or unavoidable. We also cannot be responsible for improper acts by clients or other third party. You are totally responsable for your own personal property and rented equipment.

      12.- MACAW ADVENTURE does not take responsibility for additional costs due to unfavorable weather conditions, natural catastrophe, strikes, accidents, illness, injury, loss of personal items, etc. It is the clients responsibility to carry insurance to cover these types of events. We reserve the right to modify or cancel the program due to any of the unforeseen conditions listed above.

      13.- Salkantay trek is recommended in dry season. Unexpected rain can cause snow falls causing difficult trekking conditions and possibly closure of the pass. In the case of snow falls  MACAW ADVENTURE  can not be held accountable for the need to take an alternative route. You would also need good quality trekking boots and equipment to protect you against snow related conditions, cold and glare. In extreme cases when “Salkantay trail to Machupicchu” is declared closed for safety reasons MACAW ADVENTURE can replace your trek with an alternative trek such as 4 Day  INKA  JUNGLE trek and your booking deposit money will be used for this or if you prefer an alternative tour such as 5 Day lake Titicaca package or Jungle trip etc. to give you some of the many options.
